Mocha Dick was a real life abnormally large albino bull Sperm Whale that roamed the waters of the South Pacific during the early 1800s. First encountered off the coast of Mocha Island before 1810, his unique albinism earned him a legendary unicorn like status among whalers making Mocha a priced target within the whaling communities of west coast South America. While sometimes spotted to peacefully swim along ships Mocha would however become extremely hostile when attacked, a strong fighter as he was the bull would often wreck small crafts with ease using his massive fluke. Mocha survived by accounts of around 100 skirmishes with humans before he was slain in 1838 when he appeared to aid a female whose calf had just been killed by whalers. At death bull's body yielded 100 barrels of oil, along with some ambergris(a substance used in the making of perfumes and at times worth more per ounce than gold). His scarred body was littered with over twenty harpoons embedded in his back, a stark reminder of a life fraught with battle and hardship. The tale of Mocha Dick and the ill fated voyage of the whaling ship Essex inspired former whaler turned author Herman Melville to eventually write his American masterpiece Moby Dick.
